In 1992, Congress passed the Indian Environmental General Assistance Program Act (42 U.S.C. 4368b) which authorizes EPA to provide General Assistance Program (GAP) grants to federally-recognized tribes and tribal consortia for planning, developing, and establishing environmental protection programs in Indian country, as well as for developing and implementing solid and hazardous waste programs on tribal lands.
The goal of this program is to assist tribes in developing the capacity to manage their own environmental protection programs, and to develop and implement solid and hazardous waste programs in accordance with individual tribal needs and applicable federal laws and regulations.

- The GAP Online Training Video #1 - Log into GAP Online (2Mb) is a training video for GAP Online tribal grantees. The video explains how tribal grantees can log into GAP Online using a GAP Portal user account and/or a GAP Online tribal user account.
- Indian Environmental General Assistance Program Standardized Work Plan Format for FY2007 and Beyond - EPA is requiring a standardized work plan format to ensure collection of the minimum information needed for national reporting purposes, consistent with statute, grant regulations, and EPA Orders. This allows us to better characterize the environmental and public health benefits of these activities in a consistent manner. The standardized work plan format will be required for all new awards and supplemental amendments to existing awards.
