Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Michael R. Wozny, 32, Hayward, Wis., pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Madison to possessing anabolic steroids with the intent to distribute. U.S. District Judge William M. Conley scheduled sentencing for March 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Wozny faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison without parole.

The government's proof at the guilty plea hearing established that Wozny became a target of a criminal investigation being conducted by special agents of the Food & Drug Administration in late 2006. An individual arrested in Minnesota for dealing steroids stated that he purchased those steroids from Matthew Markwood in Minnesota, and that Markwood said he was obtaining his steroids for resale from an individual in Wisconsin. A review of Markwood's phone records showed numerous phone calls with Michael Wozny's number in Hayward.

John Zellers, a/k/a "Label Doktor", was charged and convicted in U.S. District Court in New Jersey with causing the introduction of anabolic steroids into interstate commerce by his work in providing high-quality labels for individuals distributing unapproved, performance-enhancing drugs. Zellers stated that Wozny bought labels from him and that he had provided three or four orders of labels to Wozny in 2007; the smallest order he completed contained enough labels for approximately 630 bottles of anabolic steroids.

A federal search warrant was executed at Wozny's residence in Hayward in November 2007 and approximately one kilogram of powdered anabolic steroids were recovered.

United States Attorney Vaudreuil stated that today's guilty plea was the result of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Office of Criminal Investigation; Sawyer County Sheriff's Department; Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation; and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The prosecution of the case has been handled by U.S. Attorney John W. Vaudreuil.
