Bryce Canyon National Park, famous for its worldly unique geology, consists of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colorful limestone rock of the Claron Formation into bizarre shapes, including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called “hoodoos.”Photo: Anand Rane

Earlier this summer, five wounded warriors from the Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq wars attempted to summit the highest peak in North America, Mount McKinley. And fortunately for us, they brought video cameras along to document their experience. Check out the amazing and inspiring story below and be sure to share this video on your Tumblr!

Before highways and railways, before pioneers, even before Columbus…..the land we know as the United States was truly a vast wilderness. To protect these last remaining areas, in 1984 Congress created the Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. Coyote Buttes’ outstanding scenery, desert wildlife, colorful history, and opportunities for primitive recreation will remain free from the influence of man and are protected in this condition for future generations. Its 112,500 acres beckon adventurers who yearn for solitude, scenic splendor, and the chance to explore one of the most beautiful geologic formations in the world.Photo: Bob Wick, Bureau of Land Management

Another great photo from our friends at the Bureau of Land Management.mypubliclands:

The summer night sky in the Piper Mountain Wilderness Area in Inyo County, California.  Alluvial fans cover large portions of the eastern side of the wilderness, with plains and hills also part of the landscape. Desert bighorn sheep habitat can be found in three areas within this wilderness. Sagebrush and juniper-pinyon woodland are the common vegetation, with conifer trees on the higher elevations. At the base of the Inyo Mountains lies one of the northernmost stands of Joshua trees, as seen in this picture.  Piper Mountain Wilderness and many other BLM land areas are far from city lights and offer incredible night sky viewing opportunities.

225 years ago today, the Constitution of the United States was signed in Independence Hall. Today, you can tour the Hall and see where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were both signed, and you can also view the Liberty Bell. This is a site not to miss while visiting Philadelphia.Photo: National Park Service
