In 2010, the United States Mint launched the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, a 12-year initiative with 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring reverse designs depicting some of our most cherished national parks and other national sites. Under this program, the United States Mint will issue five new quarter designs per year, with one final design in 2021.
Established as Hawaii National Par in 1916, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution—processes that thrust a bare land up from the sea, creating unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. Created to preserve the natural setting of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park is one of the most fascinating biological landscapes in the world. The Hawaiian Archipelago, located more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continental land mass, is the most geographically isolated group of islands on Earth. It was first established as a national site on August 1, 1916 (39 Stat. 432).
