Authorized by Public Law 111-40, this medal is a bronze duplicate of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in recognition of their pioneering military service and exemplary record, which forged revolutionary reform in the U.S. Armed Forces.  The obverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill, depicts the portrait of a WASP with three pilots in the foreground in period uniforms walking toward their aircrafts at Avenger Field.  An airborne AT-6 is featured in the background breaking through the inner rim of the medal.  Inscriptions include WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS and 1942-1944.

The reverse design features the three aircrafts that the WASP flew during their training at Avenger Field; the AT-6, indicated by the number 264; the B-26 (Martin Marauder), indicated by the number 967; and the P-51.  The WASP wings are depicted at the base of the design.  The inscriptions are THE FIRST WOMEN IN HISTORY TO FLY AMERICAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT, ACT OF CONGRESS and 2009.  It was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.

• WASP were eventually stationed at 120 Army air bases all across America;
• They flew more than 60,000,000 miles for their country in every type of aircraft and on every type of assignment flown by the male Army Air Forces pilots, except combat;
• Through their actions, the WASP eventually were the catalyst for revolutionary reform in the integration of women pilots into the armed services.

This medal is a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented to the WASP at a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Building on March 10, 2010.

The design represents the spirit, determination and service of these brave women who forged revolutionary reform in the U.S. Armed Forces.  The AT-6, which was flown by every WASP who completed the Army Air Forces flight training program, symbolizes the breaking of the glass ceiling, which resulted in the integration of women pilots into the U.S. Armed Forces.
