chemical structure of Carbamazepine

Carbamazepine(CBZ) is a prescription drug used in a broad array of therapies, primarily as anticonvulsant. CBZ is extensively metabolized, yielding a wide spectrum of metabolites. Although little CBZ is excreted unchanged, this small fraction tends to resist sewage treatment. The amount surviving is then introduced to surface waters, explaining why it is one of the most commonly found PPCPs in the environment.
