City of Omaha Showcases Homes in North Omaha Neighborhoods

The City of Omaha showcased their efforts in revitalizing the neighborhoods of north Omaha with a tour throughout the neighborhood area. The tour of newly developed housing enhances other community efforts taking place in the area including housing rehabilitation.

The housing is designed to be affordable for households at or below 80% of the area median income.  The affordability is not only in the monthly mortgage payment but also in the monthly utility costs.  The housing is constructed to be energy friendly with a number of the houses meeting energy star standards.  Also, several of the homes used geothermal heating to lower utility bills.

HUD staff from the Omaha Field Office taking part in the tour was Mr. Earl Redrick, Field Office Director, Tim Severin, Community Planning and Development (CPD) Director and Greg Cecil, CPD Financial Analyst.

The City uses Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and CDBG-R funds to prepare sites in the inner city for housing development and then uses HOME funds from HUD for both development subsidy and homebuyer assistance to get houses built and occupied.

The tour included housing developed by non-profits, Holy Name Housing and Gesu Housing, as well as housing developed by the City.  The tour demonstrates the City’s approach of focusing resources in a neighborhood at a time when it would create a profound impact.
