A two or three-dimensional object largely defined by aesthetic value or value as an object rather than by informational value.

The Digitization Services Branch has used digital cameras to document objects and artifacts, primarily for exhibits work. The Photographic Imaging, Microfilm and Textual Preservation Lab can scan photographic intermediates of the objects and artifacts, or can digitally photograph the originals themselves. Three-dimensional objects are challenging to reproduce in a two-dimensional format. Some of the parameters that may be important to appropriately capturing three-dimensional objects and artifacts include: appropriate lighting conditions that facilitate reproduction of detail in highlight and shadow areas as well as accurate tone and color reproduction and color saturation; adjusting the camera so that the objects and artifacts remain in focus; taking multiple shots to cover different viewing angles, or zooming in on specific details that may be of importance.
