Introduction to the Assessment Decision Tool

About the Assessment Decision Tool

Welcome to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's Assessment Decision Tool (ADT). This automated system is part of OPM's recent efforts to help Federal agencies evaluate and improve their hiring processes to ensure the Federal Government has an effective civilian workforce. The system is designed to help human resources professionals and hiring supervisors/managers develop assessment strategies targeted to specific competencies and other situational factors relevant to their hiring situation (e.g., volume of applicants, level of available resources).

How Do You Use the Assessment Decision Tool?

The ADT is designed to provide you with customized information based on your specific hiring needs. Interacting with the tool is straightforward. The process is outlined below:

Step 1: Indicate Your General Purpose

First, you will need to indicate if you would like to use the tool to find out more about a particular assessment method, or if you want to use the tool to help you develop an assessment strategy tailored to your hiring situation.

Step 2: Provide Further Information

If you indicate you want to use the tool to find out more about a particular assessment method, you will have a chance to specify the method of interest to you. The system will present information from the Assessment Decision Guide and you will be able to learn more about the assessment method you selected.

If you indicate you want to use the tool to develop an assessment strategy, you will begin the process of describing your hiring situation. You will have the chance of describing your situation in terms of the competencies required for your job of interest and optionally specify situational factors relevant to your hiring situation.

Where you start is up to you!

Step 3: Review and Print Summary Reports

Based on the information you provide in Step 2, the tool will generate a customized report for you to review. You will have the option to save the information to a PDF or an accessible HTML file for future reference and ease of printing.

What Can You Do When Having Questions or Problems?

If you experience any problems while using the ADT or have questions about what to do, please submit a query at the technical support page. If you have questions or comments on the content of the ADT, please send an e-mail to competency@opm.gov.
