Pesticide Use Site Index

This Pesticide Use Site Index will help a company (or other applicant) apply to EPA to register their pesticide products, by making it easier for them to identify data requirements needed to register a pesticide product. This Index provides information on pesticide use sites and pesticide major use patterns, key information needed to complete the registration process.

Each pesticide use site is specific to the pesticide, and identifies what the pesticide will be used on or within. For example, the use site identifies crops the pesticide will be used on, or identifies within what non-crop site or thing the pesticide will be used, such as in a building, barn, or airplane. The company applying to register their pesticide is then directed to one or more major use patterns depending on the pesticide use site.

A major use pattern is a broad designation used in the tables of technical data requirements (defined by law in 40 CFR part 158), to identify which of the requirements might be pertinent to the pesticide use site. The major use pattern is designed to make it easier for those wishing to register a pesticide, to find their data requirements without needing cumbersome tables containing all pesticide use sites. The Pesticide Use Site Index replaces the information in the Appendix A "Data Requirements for Registration" in the July 1, 2006 40 CFR, part 158. EPA believes that this index will be easier to keep current and better serve the regulated community.

How to use the index of pesticide use sites with corresponding major use pattern(s) and crop group.

This index is an alphabetical list of use sites for all agricultural and nonagricultural uses. Each pesticide use site is found under the EPA Preferred Term. An EPA preferred term is the standard recognized terminology for a food or livestock feed commodity with a wide range of common names. The EPA preferred term is the only term accepted in establishing pesticide tolerances. Each use site is associated with one or more of the twelve major use patterns.

  1. Identify the pesticide use site that best corresponds to the pesticide product,
  2. Locate the major use pattern(s) to determine which of the data requirements in 40 CFR part 158 apply to the product.

Example: Identify the major use pattern(s) for the EPA Preferred Term “Almond.”

An “X” in the use pattern column specifies the use pattern for that use site. For “Almond” they are: Terrestrial food, Terrestrial nonfood, and Residential outdoor.

The index also provides the EPA Crop Group Name and Number (40 CFR 180.41) associated with the pesticide use site. Crop group information is provided in these indexes for the convenience of registrants seeking tolerance information. Tolerances are established on individual food or livestock feed commodities. In some cases, with the residue data on representative commodities, crop group tolerances can be established that include several commodities. Crop groups are based on similar biological traits, edible parts, dietary consumption, geographical distribution, economic importance, and growing practices. Tolerance information for a representative crop in a group may be extended to similar crops within the same crop group.

How to use the indexes of pesticide use sites associated with specific major use patterns.

There are twelve use pattern indexes, each corresponding to a specific major use pattern. In each index, a pesticide use site is found under the EPA Preferred Term. The EPA Crop Group Name and Number (40 CFR 180.41) are supplied for each pesticide use site.
