Key MEDLINE Indicators

January 07, 2002 [posted]

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is experiencing delays in the publication of Index Medicus and the List of Journals Indexed for Index Medicus 2002 (LJI) which is usually shipped with the January issue of Index Medicus. NLM recently implemented a new data creation and maintenance system which references the data that are included in both of these publications. This has necessitated changes in the programs that produce them and the development of new procedures for ensuring that both are accurate and complete.

The December 2001 Index Medicus is the first issue to be produced using the new software. The layout of the publication has been preserved to the extent possible, but users may notice a slight variation in the placement of data or use of punctuation. NLM expects that subscribers should receive the December issue in late January 2002.

Subscribers to LJI will receive their copy with a forthcoming monthly shipment of Index Medicus. The January and February 2002 issues of Index Medicus are expected to be delivered in February 2002. Changes and improvements made to Index Medicus will be detailed in the 2002 preface. NLM regrets the inconvenience caused by these delays, but expects to return to the normal production schedule with the February Index Medicus issue.

More Frequent Release of MEDLINE Records to PubMed and Licensees

January 23, 2002 [posted]

NLM is pleased to announce that completed MEDLINE citations (fully MeSH-indexed and quality controlled) are now released from our data creation system on a schedule that permits PubMed users to see newly completed records five times a week (Tuesday-Saturday). Many of these completed records are replacing the in process records already in PubMed. This change enables us to make fully indexed MEDLINE records available sooner. Records from the first "daily" update appeared in PubMed on January 9, 2002. These same records are released to MEDLINE licensees Tuesday-Saturday.

In the past, MEDLINE had been updated monthly, moving to semi-monthly in April 1988 and then to weekly in June 1990. More frequent updating is a direct result of NLM's reinvention efforts for our MEDLINE data creation system and our PubMed database which is part of the Entrez search and retrieval system. NLM continues to strive to make our analysis of the literature available online as quickly as possible. Updates five times a week are a welcomed enhancement for our users.
