Co-Occurring Disorders: A New Quick Guide
SAMHSA’s Knowledge Application Program has released a “Quick Guide” summarizing the information in Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 42, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders.
In a format that is condensed and easy to read, counselors and other providers can become familiar with the integration of two related types of treatment: treatment for serious mental illness and treatment for substance use disorders.
The Quick Guide provides professionals with techniques for screening, intake, and assessment of people with co-occurring disorders. It supplies five overall guiding principles for treatment, models and techniques to use day to day, and tools such as screening instruments, references to scales for assessment of withdrawal, and a definition of abuse versus dependence.
