Starting a Website

Planning is the most important part of any project, and websites are no exception.  Before you start any Web project, know what approvals you will need and complete a charter and schedule for your project.  Knowing whether you need a specific URL or redirects for your project will help you plan your work in advance.

Process and Approvals

Nearly every Web project has to get approval from the Project Review Team to start and to go live. Learn about how to develop a Web project and when you need approval from the Project Review Team.

Project Charters

Every project should have a project charter.  EERE's charter will help you figure out the scope of your project.

Domains and URLs

Most websites on EERE are located at "eere.energy.gov."  If you want a marketing URL, a .GOV site, or even a .COM site, you need to submit a request and get approval for your URL.

Redirects and Proxies

You may need redirects if you're going to retire an old website and you want to make sure users get to the correct site or page. Proxies are uncommonly used on EERE, and need special approval before they are used.
