NCAIED’s National Reservation Economic Summit features Tribal Business Leaders Forum with Members of Congress

Mesa, Ariz. – February 27, 2013 – The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED) is the most established national, non-profit organization in Indian Country, having been solely dedicated to developing American Indian economic self-sufficiency through business ownership for 44 years. The National Reservation Economic Summit (National RES), NCAIED’s signature event, is the largest and longest running American Indian business expo in the nation. It is also the NCAIED’s annual fundraising effort, helping to support its various programs and initiatives throughout Indian Country.

New to National RES in 2013 is the Tribal Business Leaders Forum: a dynamic collaboration between Executives of Tribal Enterprises, Alaska Native Corporations and members of the United States Congress. The forum is being organized in two parts.  The first half will offer members of Congress the opportunity to dialogue with Native corporations and learn more about their successes, dividends they have given back, and communities they have helped.  The second half of the forum will focus on building bridges amongst Tribes and Tribal Enterprises whom have had successes across various sectors and industries including, but not limited to, 8(a) contracting, agriculture/global enterprise and trade, oil and gas, gaming, and energy.

“The NCAIED is pleased to bring together leadership from Washington, D.C. and respected executives from across Indian Country to take part in our Tribal Business Leaders Forum at National RES Las Vegas 2013,” said Gary Davis, president and chief executive officer of NCAIED.  “The discussions to take place at the Tribal Business Leaders Forum will focus on creating long term and sustainable economic growth for our Tribal Nations. We are extremely pleased to join with NOVA Corporation in presenting our first Tribal Business Leaders Forum and welcome the attendance and support of the White House, Members of Congress, the Department of Commerce and the Minority Business Development Agency.”

NOVA Corporation, a leading information technology company owned by the Navajo Nation with offices in Window Rock, Ariz., Albuquerque, N.M., Chambersburg, Pa. and Columbia, Md. has announced its sponsorship of the Tribal Business Leaders Forum.

“The NOVA Corporation is proud to sponsor the Tribal Business Leader Forum in partnership with NCAIED. We are confident that this event will create opportunities to identify and diminish obstacles in creating a better economy for Indian Country,” said John Snider, president and chief executive officer of NOVA Corporation.  “We are committed to improving the economic condition of the Navajo People; this is our opportunity to contribute to NCAIED’s mission of developing American Indian economic self-sufficiency through business ownership.”

The forum welcomes the confirmed attendance of United States Congressmen Benny Thompson (D-MS), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and Donald Young (R-AK).  The moderator of the forum will be Mr. David Hinson, National Director of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). Also participating will be Ms. Dee Alexander, Senior Advisor on Native American Affairs for the Department of Commerce and Mr. Charles Galbraith, Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Victoria Labalme- A Lightning Bolt of Inspiration, Readies for Opening Keynote Address at RES

Posted by on Feb 19, 2013 in Event Updates, News | 0 comments

Victoria Labalme - Renowned Communications Strategist and Hall of Fame Speaker.

Victoria Labalme – Renowned Communications Strategist and Hall of Fame Speaker.

Attendees at the National Reservation Economic Summit (National RES) in March are likely to get a lightning bolt of inspiration the very first day, when renowned communications end entertainment expert Victoria Labalme gives the keynote address.

National RES 2013, March 11th-14th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, promises to present myriad insights and opportunities to benefit businesses across Indian Country. Informative talks and panel discussions, a dynamic Business Tradeshow, an expanded Procurement Expo, and countless networking opportunities are the staples. Beyond that signature fare, a stellar lineup of speakers will deliver unique insights that, if employed, could help transform everyday business into extraordinary success.

Labalme has coached Fortune 100 executives at Microsoft, Starbucks, McDonalds, Oracle, Intel, Verizon and many other corporations.  She delivered a keynote address at the first Regional Reservation Economic Summit in Tulsa, Oklahoma (RES Oklahoma) last fall, and she’ll be giving the opening keynote address at National RES on March 11, in Las Vegas.

She bases much of the content for her presentations on the idea that each person is multi-faceted, a storehouse of talents and interests that too often get silenced in a misguided aim toward success.

“Inside of every person are gifts and talents that are going untapped. It’s my mission to bring that out because it’s a gift to the world and it belongs out there,” she says.

She conveys this key idea through several presentation themes. In “The Prism Effect,” for example, she points out that as businesspeople, we too often silence parts of ourselves that could otherwise provide opportunities to connect with others, especially clients. She uses the example of a businessperson who likes to play the drums, but who figures that’s incongruous with a professional image: “If you’re a salesperson, rather than just hiding that, why don’t you keep a pair of drumsticks on your desk?” Every once in a while, she says, a client will show up who also loves the drums or who has a relative who plays.

“That bond,” she points out, “is going to go a lot further than any brochure you would hand out. What people hunger for is that connection.” She believes those connections are some of the best catalysts for business.

Another of Labalme’s themes, “The Through Line,” embodies the concept that a narrow focus on goals can actually be an impediment to success.

“This bucks the trend and myth of goal-setting,” she says. “I think we can get really distracted and off-base when we focus on goals.”

Rather, she believes, “some of the best successes have come through unexpected situations. Why you’re doing what you’re doing, the motivation and intention behind it, that is ultimately your message to the world. When you reconnect with why that really matters, it will take you to places you wouldn’t expect.”

And when you look at the most successful entrepreneurs and visionaries, she says, much of their prosperity came through unexpected twists and turns.

“You don’t always have the full answer,” she elaborates, in a post on her blog. “I think if you go where the energy seems right, even if it doesn’t make sense, you’ll find where you’re meant to be.”

Labalme says she frequently draws inspiration from the organizations she addresses – and the National Center for American Indian Economic Development, the organization behind National RES, is no exception.

“I like the amount of heart in the room,” she said. “This is a group that’s interested in growing, and it’s a population that’s gone through some challenges. And like all populations that have gone through that, they are very aware – and sensitive in the best of ways.”

The NCAIED Entwines Ancient Cahokia into National RES Las Vegas 2013

Posted by on Feb 11, 2013 in Event Updates, News | 0 comments

RES2013_Early_RegistrationThe Cahokia Mounds, just east of St. Louis, remind us of a time when Native people flourished, reaching spectacular heights as a society, an economy, and a people. And that’s why Cahokia is a perfect fit for the “National Reservation Economic Summit (National RES) Las Vegas 2013”, being held March 11-14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Designers are already working to incorporate elements of Cahokia, a pinnacle achievement of the Mississippian culture, at this year’s National RES Business Trade Show, Procurement Expo and Artisan Market, where Tribes, Tribal Enterprises, Corporations and Native entrepreneurs from all over the country – and beyond – stand to build and expand their businesses.

“I believe our National Reservation Economic Summit is a modern day version of Cahokia,” said Gary Davis, President of the National Center for American Indian Economic Development. “Our RES event gathers together our Native People from all across North America, and even participants from around the world, and brings them into one location to do business and to talk about economic development – so that we can grow all of our communities.”

Cahokia, he says, represents “a further hope, that we as Native people remember that business is not new to us. It is at the essence of this year’s theme: ‘Honoring Our Past … Defining Our Future.’”

The Cahokia Mounds represent the largest archeological site in North America north of Mexico. By 1,000 AD, the community in and around the mounds boasted large communal plazas, grand architecture, elaborate pottery and established religious, ceremonial and residential infrastructure. By AD 1250, Cahokia was larger than London. Corn was grown in such abundance that it fed up to 20,000 people – and yielded a surplus. The culture was so powerful that it is believed to spread throughout the surrounding region and into the Midwest.

National RES Las Vegas 2013 Unveils the Procurement Expo – A Fresh, Targeted Way to Network

Posted by on Feb 12, 2013 in News | 0 comments

Procurement-in-4-easy-steps_VER5forWebsiteCMWThe 27th annual National Reservation Economic Summit (National RES) will be just as amazing as in past years, with inspiring and informative keynote addresses and panel discussions, and myriad networking possibilities for tribal businesses and their buyers. This year, those connections stand to happen with more power and purpose than ever before.

National RES is the signature event of the National Center for American Indian Economic Development (NCAIED), and the single largest Native American business conference of the year. It’s taking place March 11-14, at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

This year, Native entrepreneurs will experience a major boost to the networking opportunities at National RES. In past years, the Procurement Pavilion was the place where buyers linked up with sellers; it was a separate function from the Business Trade Show. This year, the Pavilion has been redesigned as the Procurement Expo, and it’s been integrated into the Business Trade Show floor.

George Williams is the Procurement Expo Manager for RES, and Program Manager for NCAIED’s American Indian Procurement Technical Assistance Center.

“In ordinary matchmaking, generally you have one-on-one meetings, in a classroom setting,” he explains, “and then you have your trade show, where people walk around and meet you at your booth. In trade shows, you have no idea who’s gong to come up to your booth at any point in time. You’re really taking a big chance, just hoping people are going to take the initiative to come up and find you.”

But with the Procurement Expo integrated with the Business Trade Show, “we have the best of both worlds,” he says. Scheduled meetings between buyers and sellers will happen at the buyers’ booths, where materials and information are close at hand – and where the spirit of entrepreneurship fills the air.

Last year, 89 buying organizations sought goods and services from Native businesses at National RES.  Buyers this year are expected to include, among others, the U.S. Departments of Army, Navy, Air Force, Interior, Homeland Security, and Energy as well as large prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, IBM, NBC Universal, Turner Broadcasting and American Airlines.
