CPG Sec. 515.775 Cocoa Powder, Press Cake - Adulteration with Insect and Rodent Filth

 

REGULATORY ACTION GUIDANCE:

The following represents criteria for recommending legal action to CFSAN/Office of *Compliance*/Division of Enforcement (HFS-605):

  1. Insect Filth
    1. The cocoa powder or press cake in six or more subsamples contains an average of 75 or more insect fragments per 50 grams.
      or
    2. Any one subsample contains 125 or more insect fragments, even if the overall average for all subsamples is less than 75.
  2. Rodent Filth
    1. The cocoa powder or press cake in six or more subsamples contains more than 2.0 rodent hairs per 50 grams.
      or
    2. Any one subsample contains more than four rodent hairs, even if the overall average is less than 2.0 hairs.

NOTE: Insect and rodent filth analyses are conducted using method 965.38, Official Methods of Analysis, (2000) 17th Edition, AOAC, Gaithersburg, MD.
