The 15th Civil War Symposium & Reenactment

Place:   The First Division Museum at Cantigny, Wheaton, Illinois

The Saturday Symposium presentations include:

  • The 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign: Abraham Lincoln and the Union Defeat
    Peter Cozzens, U. S. Department of State

  • A Second Front: Women of the Civil War North
    Judith Ann Giesberg, Villanova University

  • Lincoln, Emancipation and the McClellan Problem
    Richard S. Slotkin, Wesleyan University

  • Difficult and Broken Ground: The Terrain Factor at Shiloh
    Timothy B. Smith, University of Tennessee at Martin

Living History Displays and Outdoor Activities:

Living History re-enactors portraying soldiers and civilians will interact with Symposium participants. During lunch, chat with fellow Symposium participants, meet Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman, and the common Civil War soldier. Tour the Soldiers' Encampment, watch Union and Confederate soldiers skirmish, or explore the outstanding museum and grounds at Cantigny. Fun, educational activities for children and adults alike will be available.

Books:

Books related to Symposium presentations, and the Civil War in general, will be on sale during the program.

Parking:

Ample parking is available in the First Division Museum's lot. The parking fee is waived for Symposium participants. Entrance to the museum and grounds is free. (Directions)

Fees:

General Public:   $40.00
Teachers/Civil War Round Table Members:   $20.00
Students, Senior Citizens (60+), Veterans and Active Duty Military:   $10.00
A boxed lunch is available for an additional $10 fee.
Outdoor activities are free.

Registration:

Seating capacity is limited to 125, so register in advance!
On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the Symposium.

Teachers:

Teachers can earn continuing education credits through the First Division Museum.
