Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (Parent K08)(Postdoctoral Individuals/New Independent Researchers)

This award enables candidates holding professional degrees (e.g., M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or equivalent degrees) to undertake 3 to 5 years of special study and supervised research with the goal of becoming independent investigators. The award also allows awardees to pursue a research career development program suited to their experience and capabilities under a mentor who is competent to provide guidance in the chosen research area.

Institutions may submit applications on behalf of candidates who hold professional degrees. At least 2 years must have elapsed since the health professional degree was granted. Candidates can have varying levels of clinical training and research experience.

All candidates must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or legal permanent residents of the U.S. Persons with temporary or student visas are not eligible. The grantee institution must have a strong, well-established research and research training program in the chosen area, accomplished faculty in the basic and clinical sciences, and a commitment to the candidate's research development. The proposed program should include an appropriate mentor.

NHLBI requires an IRB-approved data and safety monitoring plan for: (1) all clinical trials regardless of phase, and (2) all clinical research with greater than minimal risk.

Concurrent Competing Applications: K08 applicants may not hold any other Federal or non-Federal equivalent salary award, such as the American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant. NHLBI suggests that K08 applications include biographical sketches of the collaborators and consultants.

--Biostatistics research leading to the development of new methods for designing and analyzing clinical studies, including clinical trials, epidemiologic and genetics studies in heart, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders.

--Comparative effectiveness research that involves the comparison of screening, diagnostic, preventive or treatment strategies of heart, lung, blood diseases, and sleep disorders using appropriate methods from randomized controlled trials to the analysis of electronic medical records.

How to apply: Applications submitted in response to this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for Federal assistance must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov using the SF 424 Research and Related (R&R) forms and the SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide.

The SF 424 (R&R) Application Guide for NIH and Other PHS Agencies includes Part 1.7 Supplemental Instructions to the SF 424 (R&R) for Preparing an Individual Research Career Development Award (CDA) Application ("K" series).
