Faculty Diversity/Re-Entry in Biomedical Research (K01) 

(Postdoctoral Individuals/New Independent Researchers)

This program invites applications to increase the number of highly trained investigators, from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in research areas of interest to the NHLBI or from those individuals who wish to re-enter their research careers (e.g., after a hiatus due to family circumstances). It is geared toward individuals whose basic and clinical research interests are grounded in the advanced methods and experimental approaches needed to solve problems related to cardiovascular, pulmonary, and hematologic diseases in the general and health disparities populations.

Who is eligible? Faculty members who have been determined by the grantee institution to be underrepresented on faculty in biomedical and behavioral research on a national or institutional basis, such as individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, or individuals who have experienced an interruption in their research careers.

Candidates applying for this program must have been awarded a doctoral degree, such as the Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or an equivalent degree and have a full-time non-tenured faculty appointment (such as instructor or assistant professor) at an accredited college or university at the time of award. Candidates must identify a mentor who is an accomplished investigator in the proposed research area and has experience in developing independent investigators.

NHLBI has a 6 year limit of cumulative support on institutional and mentored Ks (e.g., K12 or KL2 plus the K01). A candidate for the K01 may not concurrently apply for or have an award pending for any other NIH career development award.

The opportunities? Research training and mentored career development

Duration of support? 3 to 5 years, at least 9 person-months (75 percent of full-time professional effort)

Where? At domestic research institutions

Applications due? July 9, 2012; February 7, 2013; February 7, 2014; by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

Salary: Salary support up to $75,000 per year plus fringe benefits and research support up to $30,000 per year.

Prospective applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent to the Director, Office of Scientific Review at the address listed below.  Although a letter of intent is not required, is not binding, and does not enter into the review of a subsequent application, the information that it contains allows the NHLBI staff to estimate the potential review workload and plan the review.
