Thunderstorm Preparedness

Far too many people risk injury and possible death by underestimating the danger in common thunderstorms. Thunderstorms can produce lightning, flash flooding, tornadoes, strong wind and hail. Thunderstorms typically occur during warm humid conditions in summer, but are frequently occurring throughout the year. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), the number one cause of death associated with thunderstorms comes from flash floods. If you approach a flooded street, follow NOAA's advice: "Turn Around, Don't Drown!TM" Beware of contaminated water or standing water that has become electrically charged by downed power lines. Weather warnings may save your life. A "thunderstorm watch" means conditions are favorable for a storm, but a "thunderstorm warning" means a storm has been spotted and there is imminent danger to life and property. For more information, visit Military OneSource Natural Disaster page. Information about thunderstorms also is offered by the National Weather Service and Ready.gov.
