Osteoporosis affects 8 million American women and about 2 million American men. As many as 12 million more Americans are at risk.

Women are more likely to get osteoporosis because they lose about 20% of bone mass after menopause. Losing bone mass can lead to weaker bones that are fragile and easy to break.
