Government Information Locator Service (GILS)

The Government Information Locator Service (GILS) was created in 1994 to provide a mechanism for users to identify, locate, and describe publicly available Federal information resources, including electronic information resources. In the years since GILS was issued, advances in technology have made the standard obsolete and agencies no longer complete the intensive cataloging efforts mandated by GILS.

An archive database from the Government Printing Office (GPO) that includes GILS records from contributing agencies and spans December 7, 1994, through September 2, 2008, is available on GPO Access. For agencies that mounted their GILS records elsewhere, GPO Access provides pointer records to describe and link to their GILS holdings. Go to: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/gils/browse.html.

Current as of August 2010
