Evaluation of the DoD Safety Program

“Combat Power Begins With Safety”

Beginning in 2001, the Secretary of Defense launched an executive assessment of the DoD safety program and challenged the senior leaders to reduce in 2 years the accident mishap rate by 50 percent.  Our evaluation is designed to assist the Department in achieving the Secretary of Defense’s goal.

To achieve the evaluation objectives, we partnered with the National Safety Council, the Services’ safety centers, Reserve Component safety offices, and safety experts in and out of government.  We interviewed over 100 senior leaders including the Deputy Secretary of Defense.  The climate perception survey encompassed a sample of 317,000 individuals in four demographic groups drawn from 3.5 million DoD military and civilian personnel.

OIG provided summary data, observations, findings, and program recommendations in briefings to:
•  Senior Leaders
•  Active Duty Personnel
•  Civilian Personnel
•  Guard and Reserve Personnel
•  Perception Survey Synopsis

Subject areas in the briefings included:
