Genomics of model organisms and human biology: Insights from the modENCODE Project


Dr. Elise A. Feingold is a Program Director in Genome Analysis at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). She received a B.A. in biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from Yale University. She completed post-doctoral research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Following a one-year training experience in National Institutes of Health (NIH) extramural programs as a grants associate, Dr. Feingold joined the extramural division of what is now the National Human Genome Research Institute in 1992. Since that time, her area of focus has been on gene discovery, gene expression and functional genomics.

From its inception until 2004, Dr. Feingold managed, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, the Mammalian Gene Collection project, which created a comprehensive collection of sequence verified full-length human and mouse cDNA clones.

Dr. Feingold currently leads the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) and the related project in model organisms (modENCODE) to identify all of the functional elements in the human, and the D. melanogaster and C. elegans genomes, respectively. In addition, Dr. Feingold manages a portfolio of research grants in functional genomics including several Centers of Excellence in Genomic Sciences (CEGS). Dr. Feingold serves on the NIH Common Fund Epigenomics and High Risk - High Reward working groups.
