The IHS Division of Diabetes, Area Diabetes Consultants and the Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee work with the Special Diabetes Programs for Indians grants to provide diabetes treatment and prevention services to IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian health programs. This section describes these groups and organizations and introduces their members.
The Division is responsible for developing, documenting and sustaining clinical and public health efforts to treat and prevent diabetes in American Indians and Alaska Natives. This section introduces the history, activities, leadership, staff members and positive impacts of the Division of Diabetes.
There is an ADC,located in each of the 12 IHS Areas who coordinates training and oversees support to the SDPI grants. The ADCs are health care professionals with expertise in diabetes. They play a critical role in supporting each IHS Area’s diabetes treatment and prevention activities.
Tribal consultation is an integral part of federal program development. The TLDC makes recommendations to the IHS Director on broad-based policy and advocacy priorities for diabetes and related chronic conditions. The TLDC is composed of one elected Tribal Leader from each of the 12 IHS Areas, one federal representative and technical advisors from groups representing national organizations.
