Secretary Bryson’s top priority is helping American businesses build things here and sell them everywhere.  The Commerce Department is committed to making it is as easy as possible for American businesses to export their goods to the 95% of the world’s consumers who live outside the U.S.

That’s why President Obama created the National Exports Initiative (NEI), with the goal of doubling exports by the end of 2014. In the two years since the President signed the NEI Executive Order, Commerce Department initiatives have helped business across the country export to new markets.  As a result of these and other efforts, data shows that jobs supported by U.S. exports increased by 1.2 million between 2009 and 2011.

These are just a few of the businesses that have become successful exporters with the help of Commerce Department resources:

Virginia and California satellite companies win $160 million project in Thailand

Satellite supplier Orbital Sciences Corp., located in Dulles, VA, and launch services supplier Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), located in Hawthorne, CA, received U.S. Commercial Service support in their respective bids to supply a satellite and launch services for a Thai government project. The Thai Ministry of Information & Communication Technology approved the satellite project for Orbital and SpaceX in May 2011. According to the companies, the $160 million project will support 400 jobs at Orbital’s headquarters in Virginia and 4,200 jobs at the California and Texas facilities of SpaceX.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company of Oak Brook, Illinois wins $51 million project in Bahrain

The U.S. Commercial Service and U.S. Embassy in Bahrain successfully advocated for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, to provide dredging and land reclamation services to the Bahraini Ministry of Housing for the East Hidd Housing Development project. The final project included $51 million in U.S. export content  and supported 280 U.S. jobs.

Acrow Corporation of America signs $10 million contract with Mexico

Acrow Corporation of America, a Parsippany, NJ modular bridges manufacturer, contacted the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service for assistance in regards to a bid to the Mexican government.  USFCS support resulted in Acrow successfully signing a $10 million contract to supply modular bridges to the Mexican Secretariat of Communications and Transportation.

J. R. Clancy, Inc. Secures Contract in Saudi Arabia for $5 Million

J.R. Clancy Inc. of Syracuse, NY, a leader in the design and manufacture of rigging systems for theaters and studios around the world, contacted the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service to investigate delays and non‐transparency of a government procurement bid process for a theatre project in Saudi Arabia. USFCS assistance resulted in the company winning a $5 million contract to supply theatre rigging.

Sirchie of North Carolina wins $1.1 million contract with Brazilian government

Sirchie manufactures crime scene investigation kits and materials used by law enforcement officials worldwide. This Youngsville, NC company contacted the U.S. Commercial Service office in Raleigh for help exporting to Brazil. Sirchie utilized a Gold Key Service in Brazil to meet with key industry officials and ministries, including local police and law enforcement. As a result of assistance from the Commercial Service, Sirchie successfully made a $1.1 million sale to the Brazilian government.
