Violence Against American Indian and Alaska Native Women: Section 904 Researchers' Workshop

In spring 2009, NIJ convened a two-day researchers' workshop to coordinate with and elicit feedback from the research community regarding NIJ's research program on violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women. NIJ brought together prominent researchers and experts in the following areas:

• Violence against women.
• American Indian and Alaska Native research and evaluation.
• Conducting research in Indian Country.
• Public health and public safety issues in Indian Country.

Participants discussed the scientific feasibility and practical considerations of NIJ's research program to ensure that it was viable, systematic and comprehensive.

The participants provided guidance, feedback and recommendations related to the following topics:

• Sampling.
• Units of analysis.
• Culturally appropriate methods, scales and measures.
• Modes of survey administration.
• Ethical considerations.
• Facilitating participation by tribal communities.
• Outreach.
