The Office of Information Policy employs highly qualified attorneys to serve as Attorney-Advisors.  OIP is responsible for encouraging agency compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and for ensuring that the President's FOIA Memorandum and the Attorney General's FOIA Guidelines are fully implemented across the government.  An OIP Attorney-Advisor's responsibilities include adjudicating appeals from the denial of access to records by any Department component under the FOIA or Privacy Act of 1974, providing individualized guidance to agencies on questions relating to the application of the FOIA, and handling the defense of certain FOIA matters in litigation.

Applicants must have a J.D. degree, be an active member of at least one bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least one year of post-J.D. legal experience. The Office of Information Policy employs enthusiastic and creative individuals to serve as FOIA Specialists.  A FOIA Specialist is responsible for conducting research and analyzing the contents of records to make a disclosure determination under the FOIA or Privacy Act of 1974. This includes conducting record searches and coordinating with other components of the Department on procedural problems involving complex cases.

The Office of Information Policy employs current law students to serve as Administrative Law Specialists. An Administrative Law Specialist assists both the Attorney-Advisors and FOIA Specialists of OIP in a wide variety of ways, including conducting research, analyzing documents for disclosure, drafting correspondence, and assisting in the processing of initial requests and administrative appeals. This position offers full-time employment during the summer and part-time employment during the academic year.

Applicants must have completed the first year of law school, have excellent legal research and writing skills, and an interest in the FOIA. When an Administrative Law Specialist position is available, the hiring cycle ends in early spring.
