PubMed® for Trainers | Teaching with Technology: Tips, Techniques and Tools | What We Learned in “School”: Stories from Three Training and Learning Conferences | TOXNET® and Beyond
PubMed® and TOXNET® and Beyond are taught by the trainers at the National Library of Medicine Training Center throughout the United States and by the MEDLARS Management Section trainers at the National Library of Medicine. PubMed® for Trainers requires attendance at all sessions, both online and in-person.
Classes are open only to residents of the United States.

NLM Training: PubMed® for Trainers Agenda >
PubMed® for Trainers is held in 4 sessions, 3 online sessions and 1 in person session. The class is eligible for 15 hours of MLA CE credit. This hands-on course consists of lectures, individual exercises, group work and discussions in four sessions, with approximately 2-3 hours of independent work to be done outside of class time. NLM or NTC trainers will deliver the lectures and facilitate discussions.
Objectives: For current and future PubMed trainers to discover and develop:
- functional knowledge of the MEDLINE® database,
- understanding of the structure and use of the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH®) vocabulary in MEDLINE/PubMed,
- expertise in the use of features and functions of the PubMed system, and
- techniques and best practices in MEDLINE/PubMed instruction with fellow trainers.
The class is intended specifically for those who train, or will train, others to use PubMed. This class could be for you if you teach PubMed to large groups, small groups, or one-on-one training. We look forward to lively discussions on PubMed instruction and adult education best practices.
NLM Training: Teaching with Technology: Tips, Techniques and Tools Agenda >
This course will acquaint attendees with information about using technology tools for teaching distance learning courses. We will discuss options and best practices for asynchronous and synchronous distance classes, as well as “blended” classes that offer both in-person and online options. Adult learning principles will be reviewed. We will examine and discuss examples of software and website tools in teaching.
The class is taught "asynchronously" using the Moodle course management system, so you can complete the classwork at a time convenient for you. Allow approximately 2 hours per week for classwork. There are 4 weeks of assignments, readings, and discussions, with the 5th week saved for a "catch-up" week. Upon completion of the class you will receive 8 MLA CE credits.

Using the National Library of Medicine's Environmental Health and Toxicology Portal
This course is designed to convey the basics of searching the NLM's TOXNET®, a Web-based system of databases in the areas of toxicology, environmental health, and related fields. The course will also teach students how to utilize NLM's environmental health and toxicology portal which provides resources beyond the TOXNET® databases. Students will learn the content and structure of files covering toxicology data, toxicology literature, toxic releases, and chemical nomenclature. Among the databases highlighted will be TOXLINE, the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI), and ChemIDplus. The course, taught by NLM instructors, will be conducted in a computer lab and includes lectures, online demonstrations, and hands-on exercises.
TOXNET® is a free class and is awarded 6.0 MLA continuing education credits.
