Great Basin Cache

The Great Basin Cache (GBK) is one of 11 National Interagency Support Caches (NISC) in the United States. It provides supply support to incidents within the Great Basin and to other geographic areas as requested.

GBK, located at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho, has a base inventory of approximately 3,700 different items at a value of $20 million. This Bureau of Land Management (BLM) owned cache supports many types of emergency situations in addition to wildland fire, such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes. Planned events such as a prescribed fire are also supported.

In addition to incident support, GBK is the central distribution point for interagency training and reference documents that all emergency management groups use. This is a national interagency mission which allows fire fighters and other emergency personnel (Federal, State, Private, International) to use the same standard information for training in all aspects of:

  • Fire Suppression
  • Fire Prevention
  • Prescribed Fire
  • Fire Behavior
  • Incident Command System (ICS), the management organization used for emergency situations, including fires and other natural disasters

Ease in procuring these items has assisted mutual aid, cooperation and communication. It has especially helped promote the most important aspect of any job, safety.
