UQM, based in Frederick, Colorado, has received a $45 million grant from the Department of Energy through its Vehicle Technologies program, which supports research and development of cars and trucks that do not use petroleum. Founded in 1967, UQM manufactures electric-drive systems for all-electric and hybrid cars, buses, recreational vehicles, and golf carts. The grant allows the company to acquire new equipment in order to ramp up production of its motors in anticipation of growth in the hybrid and electric-car industry. The company, which currently employs 60 mechanical, electrical and software engineers and automotive and electronic technicians, estimates that the Recovery award will help create up to 3,000 new manufacturing jobs at the company over the next three years.
