Minibar by Jose Andres 2.0: Bigger, not better

“Fabes con almejas — beans with clams — at the recently relocated Minibar by Jose Andres is one of those dishes you marvel at when it arrives and discuss with your companions the next day.”
And that’s pretty much the end of the good news as far as Tom Sietsema’s review of the relocated Minibar is concerned. The former six-seat, 3 1/2 star ...

Today's Editors' Picks

  • The Most Wonderful Ale of the Year - Bar/Club Event
There are a lot of expat Midwesterners in D.C. How else to explain the huge crowds at Great Lakes Beer events, or all the Cleveland Indians caps therein? Of course, it could just be that the East Coast has discovered how good Ohio beer can be. The in-demand Great Lakes Christmas Ale is going on tap at Scion, along with 10 other regular and seasonal beers. All Great Lakes beers are $4 from 5 p.m. on, which makes them a steal. Christmas Ale is fine, but you should also head straight for the limited Blackout Stout and the Engine 20 smoked pale ale, which is usually only available at the Cleveland brewpub. (Sister restaurant Crios will also have a few taps, including Christmas Ale, but the larger and most interesting selection is at Scion.)
    Scion | Washington, DC
  • Give a Can, Get a Can - Bar/Club Event
‘Tis the season for charity events at bars. Pizzeria Paradiso is bringing back last year’s “Give a Can, Get a Can” fundraiser for Martha’s Table. Bring a nonperishable can of food to the Dupont Circle restaurant on Thursday, Nov. 29, and you’ll get a free can of beer. Bring two cans of food, get two cans of beer. And so on. The best part: Because you’re at a serious beer bar, you can trade a can of green beans for a can of DC Brau, Oskar Blues or Maui, among other brews. The trade-in runs all day, so feel free to stop by at lunch or happy hour.
    Pizzeria Paradiso | Alexandria, VA

  • Till Von Sein - Bar/Club Event
If you’ve been around D.C. long enough, you may have heard references to the mysterious (and slightly sketchy) after-hours venue called the House of Secrets. Though it has been officially closed for years, this LeDroit-Park-house-turned-club is back and legal, at least for one night. The reason for this is an appearance by Berlin’s Till Van Sein, who specializes in the kind of warm, deep house beats that keep people on the dance floor for hours. (Locals Chris Burns and Sarah Myers, who travel the same path, open the night.) Look for separate rooms featuring DJs from D.C.’s Future Times label and, for early arrivals, Kid Congo Powers of the Cramps and the Gun Club rocking the decks during an open bar. (9 to 10:30 p.m.)
