A boy plays with the fruit of the guarana plant at a farm in Maues, 160 miles (256 km) east of Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon, December 2, 2012. The town of Maues is nicknamed the 'Land of Guarana' and is the host to the annual Guarana Festival, with the woody vine being the main source of income for the region. The guarana plant is the source of the seed with which Brazil's famous guarana soft drink is made, and which is incorporated into food products as an effective stimulant due to its high concentration of caffeine, twice that of coffee. In the language of the Guarani Indians, guarana means 'fruit like the eyes of the people.' Picture taken December 2, 2012. ONE TIME USE ONLY--------Pinnacles of sandstone rise through the orange dunes of the Karnasai Valley, a few kilometers from Chad’s border with Libya. The orange sand is formed by the erosion of Nubian Sandstone, which itself was formed from ancient sand dunes millions of years ago. Thus the sand is being recycled, from dune to rock to sand and back to dune again. Strong Harmattan winds sandblast the base of the sandstone pinnacles, and beautiful wind pits around their bases. This is one of the most remote parts of the Sahara. Except for one or two families of goat herders who come here once a year, it is uninhabited and otherworldly. (George Steinmetz)
