Title: Rural Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Resiliency Index and Associated Health Outcomes. Policy Brief (July 2011)
Abstract: This policy brief discusses the creation of the Vulnerability and Resiliency Index (VRI), an index of social and economic variables that are related to population health outcomes among rural and urban U.S. counties, and examines variability in this index across rural and urban counties. It uses the Area Resource File, Economic Research Service, US Census, and death certificate data from the National Center for Health Statistics to construct the VRI, presents findings showing worse VRI scores in more rural areas of the U.S., and presents data supporting the need for health promotion and economic programs. The brief includes a table, figures, and references.
