Midwest hospitals lead in newborn male circumcision rates

More than 75 percent of male infants born in Midwest hospitals are circumcised—three times the number circumcised in hospitals in the West, according to a new statistical brief from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Circumcisions Performed in U.S. Hospitals, 2009. This brief looks at trend data since 1993, circumcision rates by payer, income, and location, and average length of stay for babies who are circumcised.

The data are from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a database of the AHRQ-administered Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (http://www.ahrq.gov/data/hcup/datahcup.htm).
