FIRE FIGHTER FATALITY INVESTIGATION AND PREVENTION PROGRAM

Cold-Storage and Warehouse Building Fire

Each year an average of 100 fire fighters die in the line of duty. To address this continuing national occupational fatality problem, NIOSH conducts independent investigations of fire fighter line of duty deaths. This web page provides access to NIOSH investigation reports and other fire fighter safety resources.

Spotlight

Two recent line-of-duty deaths during SCUBA diving training exercises highlight the potential hazards that fire fighters may face when diving. See the NIOSH publication Training Dives Present Serious Hazards to Fire Fighters for recommendations on safe diving procedures. Additional information on fire department dive requirements can be found in NFPA 1006, Standard for Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications, Chapter 13, and NFPA 1670, Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents, Chapter 9.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently released a Safety Alert describing the potential hazards resulting from thermal degradation of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepiece lenses during extreme firefighting conditions. The NFPA Safety Alert is based in part on findings from a number of NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program investigations. View the full NFPA Safety Alert.
