Transition Resources for the Military Leader

There are numerous resources available to support service members and their families throughout the transition process. Information and assistance is available through each branch of the military, the Department of Defense, Department of Labor (DOL), the Veterans Administration (VA), and on the Internet. All military leaders are encouraged to be aware of these important transition resources and to highlight these programs and services to separating and retiring members of the command.

The primary resource for transitioning service members is their service branch's Transition Assistance Office. Provided on major military installations, the Transition Assistance Office is typically located at the Family Support/Service Center for the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. On Army installations, services are provided at Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) Centers.

The Internet has numerous websites relating to military deployments. Although some are reliable, some may have outdated or inaccurate information. Government (.gov), military (.mil), educational (.edu), and organization (.org) websites are generally more reliable than commercial (.com) resources.
