The Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) works collaboratively with the following academic institutions and affiliations to improve the health status of America's racial and ethnic minorities.

MCUR

A Medical Colleges & Universities Roundtable (MCUR) was created to foster greater collaboration on health disparities and related workforce development issues, and discuss specific actions to eliminate and reduce health disparities, including ways to increase minority representation in public health professions and as students at minority medical colleges.


General Academic Resources


Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
The AAMC serves and leads the academic medicine community to improve the health of all.

AspiringDoc.org
An AAMC Campaign to Increase Diversity in Medicine.

Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA)
GLMA's mission is to ensure equality in health care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and health care providers.

Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
MUSC improves health education and teaches healthy habits through the Partners in Wellness program. The program promotes diabetes and hypertension awareness begining with college stundents and extending to communities.

American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC)
AIHEC is a professional association for Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) governed by each member institution.

Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs)
The Tribal Colleges and Universliteis (TCU) initiative was established by the White House Executive Order 13021 on October 19, 1996. Since the Tribal College Movement began i the late 1960s, the number of TCUs has grown. All of the Tribal Colleges are members of AIHEC, a professional association governed by each member institution.

Asian American Academic Resources

AsianAmerican

University of California, Irvine Libraries - Southeast Asian Archive
The Archive collects materials relating to the resettlement of Southeast Asian refugees and immigrants in the United States (and to a lesser extend, Worldwide), the boat poeple and land refugees, and the culture and history of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. There is a special focus on materials pertaining to Southeast Asians in Orange County and Califronia.

Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC)
As part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, PBRC encourages and fosters research in diverse fields of biology and medicine. PBRC researchers, most of whom ar ealso affiiliated with academic departments, provide training for graduate and undergraduate stucents, with a special emphaisis on minority research opportunities.

As part of PBRC, the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) program expands the national capability for research in the health related sciences by providing grant support to predominantly minority institutions that offer the doctorate in the health professions or in a health-related science.

Hispanic/Latino Academic Resources

HL

Columbia University, Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS)
ILAS is the center for Latin America policy development and research at Columbia University. The institute is housed in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), which provides students and faculty with access to the resources of one of the major policy institutions in the World.

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)
HACU is committed to Hispanic higher education success in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America, and Spain. HACU is the only national educational association that represents Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Hispanic Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS)
HSHPS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1996 as part of the HHS Hispanic Agenda for Action initiative, with the intention of addressing the mounting public health issue of providing quality and culturally competent healthcare to Hispanics living in the United States. HSHPS supports the missions of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in the United States. OMHHE funds a Cooperative Agreement with HSHPS to "enhance research and capacity building" in these institutions. All medical schools and schools of public health in the United States with a minimum proportion of Hispanic students are eligible for membership.

UCLA, Latin American Institute (LAI)
Established in 1959 at UCLA, the Institute is committed to excellence in its exchange of knowledge with students, specialists, and the surrounding community, and equips leaders and scholars with the information and skills required for understanding complex Latin American societies.

UMass, Mauricio Gaston Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy
The Gaston Institute was established at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, through the initiative of Latino community activitsts and academicians in response to a need for improved understanding of Latino experiences and living conditions in Massachusetts. The institute informs policy makers about issues vital to the Commonwealth's growing Latino community and to provide this community with information and analysis necessary for effective participation in public policy development.

Association of Minority Health Professions Schools, Inc. (AMHPS)
AMHPS is a nonprofit, educational, scientific and charitable 501(c)3 organization that provides support for professional education, research and community service that promotes optimum health among minoritites and the under-served. OMHHE funds a Cooperative Agreement with MHPF to "enhance professional education, research infrastructure, and community service" by engaging the collaborative resources, scholarships, and technology for minority health professional schools.

Institute for College Research Development and Support (ICRDS)
The institute was established to help strengthen and enhance the capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to participate in research and related projects. Its focus includes all minority institutions of higher education, including Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Tribal Colleges & Universities (TCUs)

Morehouse College, Public Health Sciences Institute (PHSI)
PHSI, established at Morehouse College, is committed to increasing the number of minority students who pursue careers in public health. OMHHE funds a Cooperative Agreement with PHSI to "increase knowledge and skills of under-represented minority students"through academic programs, research, and training progrrams for students and faculty.

Morehouse School of Medicine, Prevention Research Center (PRC)
The Prevention Center, established by Morehouse School of Medicine, is an interdisciplinary center for research on prevention in African American and other minority communities. The Center has collaborated with OMHHE in the past to develop a faith-based HIV/AIDS prevention program targeting Arfican American Women.

National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO)
OMHHE Partners with NAFEO to enhance and stregnthen the capapcity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to participate in Federally-sponsored programs.

Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge (SUBR)
SUBR coordinates and publishes the HBCU Capabilities Directory, designed to enhance and strengthen caapacity of HBCUs to participate in Federally funded programs.
