Homicide Prevention Training

Training Course: National Homicide Review Training and Technical Assistance
Mode of Delivery: Classroom (supplemented by observation of live homicide case reviews); Local site training and technical assistance on a limited basis.
Training Provider: Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission (partnership of City of Milwaukee Health Department and Police Department)
Target Audience: Law enforcement personnel engaged in homicide prevention and investigation and allied practitioners from education, corrections, and public health.

Course Description: The purpose of the training and technical assistance is to build the capacity of local jurisdictions to prevent homicides and related events (e.g., nonfatal shootings and near fatal domestic violence incidents) using a “Homicide Review” prevention model developed in Milwaukee.  The Homicide Reviews are a proven community policing strategy that the mayor’s office, police department, and other community partners have used since 2005.  Training participants will learn how to start a homicide review process in their jurisdiction.  Interested participants will be eligible to receive in-person and long distance training and technical assistance based on demonstrated need and available funding and resources.
