Office of Technology Transfer and Development

The NHLBI Office of Technology Transfer and Development (OTTAD)

OTTAD's primary mission is to enable NHLBI's intramural researchers to interact more effectively with their counterparts in the private sector and in academia. The office works with NHLBI intramural investigators to establish collaborative relationship that further develop their existing technologies, allow them to share their technologies with outside laboratories, or create new technologies in collaboration with others with the ultimate goal of benefitting the public health, particularly by decreasing the frequency and severity of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases in the population. To this end, OTTAD negotiates Cooperative Research Development Agreements (CRADAs), Research Collaboration Agreements (RCAs), Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and other legal agreements on behalf of NHLBI that facilitate collaboration while protecting NHLBI's Intellectual Property interests.

The office acts as the contact point within the Institute for all new inventions made by NHLBI intramural researchers. The office advises the Scientific Director, intramural investigators and NHLBI leadership on issues relating to copyrighting, patenting and intellectual property. In addition, the office manages NHLBI's large and diverse portfolio of technologies that are available for commercial licensing.

OTTAD is also an NIH technology transfer Competitive Service Center (CSC) and works closely with its NIH client institutes to meet their technology transfer and intellectual property needs. OTTAD's client institutes are the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR).
