From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Nutritionist Janet de Jesus isn’t big on short-term diets. She prefers plans to make long term lifestyle changes. People often make goals to go on diets in the new year, but they are often short:

“Changing the way you eat and also increasing your physical activity is really worth it for your health. Give it a try and don’t get too frustrated. We all stumble. Keep it up throughout the year.” (10 seconds)

De Jesus is with the National Institutes of Health, which has two stellar eating plans – DASH and TLC. They were designed to promote blood pressure and blood cholesterol control, but experts rank them as very good ways to have complete, balanced nutrition with the right calorie counts.  U.S. News and World Report ranked them as the number-one and number-two eating plans. Also, unlike some other plans, they’re free.
