Use of Force Instructor Training Program (UOFITP)

This course has been designed to give the student the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully design, develop and implement Use of Force training using static, dynamic and interactive training principles.

This course has been developed for those law enforcement professionals who train officers or agents in the principles of Use of Force, develop or revise Use of Force policy, and are responsible for review and evaluation of agency Use of Force incidents. It is not designed as an end user course which teaches an individual how to use force correctly. It utilizes adult learning principles as well as problem based training, role-play, lecture and demonstrations to give the student the skills they need to be successful developing and teaching their own training programs related to Use of Force.

  • Application of the Use of Force
  • Legal issues as it relates to Use of Force
  • Officer Response Tactics (ORT)
  • Developing Training Scenarios
  • Use of Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA)
  • Student Centered Feedback
  • Evaluating student performance
  • Instructor Methodologies (Teach backs)
  • Court Testimony relating to Use of Force Incidents
  • Oral Board
  • Documenting Use of Force incidents
  • Safety issues related to Use of Force Training
  • Designing and implementing successful interactive Use of Force Training

Course Requirements

  • Attend and successfully complete all components of training. Late arrivals and early dismissals are not permitted.
  • Pass a FLETC health screening
  • Successfully pass (minimum score of 80%) the written examination given at the end of the first week. 
  • Skill performance Practical Exercise.
  • Must be able to participate in Intensive Training lasting up to 10 hours per day and not have any medical restrictions.
  • Pre-registration is required.
  • Students need to bring
  • Duty gear for training weapon if available (Glock or Sig)
  • Camelback or other means of hydration
  • Appropriate wear (BDU, Agency t-shirt (long sleeve or short sleeve), boots, etc))
  • Knee pads and elbow pads are recommend (ORT Portion of Training) but not required
  • Bug Spray
