  ClinicalTrials.gov is the openly available federal registry and results database of clinical trials conducted in the United States and around the world. As of August, 2012, ClinicalTrials.gov provides access to more than 130,000 trial records, and more than 7,000 studies with summary results.

  ClinicalTrials.gov is a vital resource for researchers, healthcare providers, and health sciences librarians who wish to consult the entire body of evidence on any particular topic.

  This beta test will take place December 4th through December 19th. 

  

• Keeping the Faith: Using the Web to Enhance Your Health Ministry

• Patient Safety Resource Seminar - GMR

  This interactive class focuses on ways librarians can become more involved in patient safety processes and activities - both within their institutions and organizations and in providing patient safety resources for their constituencies. Topics include understanding the definitions and issues of patient safety; locating where patient safety practices and contacts exist within an institution; identifying appropriate resources; and library advocacy in the area of patient safety.

  

• The Canny Consumer: Resources for Consumer Health Decision-Making - SEA

  With the sharp rise in web-informed consumers and today’s fast paced communication technology and inclusive health care systems, information is readily available. Many health care systems now offer portable electronic records and electronic prescription services. The technologically savvy generation makes use of tools such as YouTube, blogs, and websites to share experiences in their health care. Yet, with the estimated 90 million Americans who do not understand how to read, comprehend, or use health information, health literacy will determine who is left behind in this techno cultural revolution. This class will focus on the resources health consumers or those assisting consumers, can use to navigate the health care system, find quality health information and make informed health care decisions. An interactive session will allow participants to explore new and upcoming technologies such as personal health records and e-health tools. Implications for those left behind, including the ethical, social, and privacy issues concerning these new technologies will also be discussed.

  

• Will Duct Tape Cure My Warts? Examining Complementary and Alternative Medicine - MAR

  The goal of this class is to increase understanding of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Students will learn the history of CAM and its impact on medical practices. They will learn how CAM is used, how to evaluate CAM website, and how to look up information about the effectiveness of CAM therapies.

• Updating DOCLINE Serial Holdings

  This course provides a self-paced overview on keeping DOCLINE serials holdings up-to-date. We will also cover the NLM Journal Donation Program so that libraries can "give back" to NLM as a token of the valuable role NLM plays in our national document delivery program.   Thinking about how to promote your services and reach out to more people? Want to learn how podcasts can help and how to make your own? This hands-on class is designed to provide a fun yet informative introduction to podcasting and how you can utilize this technology in your library services, to enable your users to access the information whenever they want, wherever they want and however they want it. Basic steps and suggestions on how to make a podcast will be covered and students will be able to enjoy hands-on practice on popular audio recording and editing software and make their first personal podcast!

  Cool Creative Communications: 3 Part Class

  This is an asynchronous class.

  For each class part, participants have 7 days to complete their assignment and 5 days to complete their peer critique for each of the 3 class sections.

  Students will compete assigned exercises that they will share with their class peers.

  Students are expected to spend:

  • 1.5 hours on content learning
  • 3 hours of in-depth learning on student selected tool/application and preparing their class assignment
  • 0.5 hours on peer critique.

  Each class section lasts two weeks and overlaps the next class by a week.

  Participants are encouraged to sign up for all 3 parts, but may take them individually with the approval of the instructors.

  Part 1: Engaging Users via Social Media (Part 1 of 3): This class covers popular social media tools proven to be effective in reaching customers. Students will increase their knowledge on a variety of social media applications and strategies on implementing a communication plan.

  Part 2: Dazzling Data Visualization (Part 2 of 3): This class covers concepts of visually representing data and proven tools that are effective in making data understood at just a glance. Students will increase their knowledge on data visualization concepts and a variety of data visualization applications.

  Part 3: The WOW Factor - Clear Concise Presentations (Part 3 of 3): This class covers popular presentation applications and approaches to effective presentations Students will increase their knowledge and skills to better communicate with their presentations.

Prerequisites for attending a Moodle course at nnlm.gov

• A computer with Internet access (note that firewalls and spam filters can be problems).
  
• A modern browser such as FireFox 13+ or Google Chrome; Internet Explorer 8+ usually works too.  We recommend that you set up your browser according to the NLM DOCLINE Browser Settings guidelines, which are designed to assure that intereactive features will work.  Moodle needs Javascript and cookies to function properly.
  
• You may need to obtain a registration key from the Instructor.

Common technical support issues for the NN/LM Moodle

A common issue involves lost passwords. Each Moodle account has a unique UserName (the "nickname" you use when you log into the Moodle) which is tied to a unique e-mail address. This is necessary so the system can send you a new password when you need one. If you create a second account for yourself, you will be required to set it up with a different e-mail address than your first account.
