Cholesterol Education - 1

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters, I’m Joe Balintfy. High blood cholesterol affects over 65 million Americans. And NIH nutritionist Janet De Jesus says it is important for people to know their cholesterol numbers.

De Jesus: High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is the number one killer of Americans.

Narrator: Cholesterol is measured with a blood test, the best kind is called a fasting lipid panel which has to be done in a doctor’s office. Experts recommend a total blood cholesterol level of less than 200 and an LDL or so-called bad cholesterol of less than 100. For more information on blood cholesterol and what cholesterol numbers mean, visit www.nhlbi.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
