Cholesterol Education - 2

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters, I’m Joe Balintfy. High blood cholesterol is a serious condition that increases risk for heart disease. The higher the cholesterol level, the greater the risk. NIH nutritionist, Janet De Jesus explains that it builds up in the blood stream.

De Jesus: Cholesterol is a waxy, like fatty type substance that’s in your body.

Narrator: High blood cholesterol itself does not cause symptoms, so many people are unaware that their cholesterol level is too high. Lowering cholesterol levels that are too high reduces the chance of having a heart attack or dying of heart disease. For more information on blood cholesterol and how to measure cholesterol, visit www.nhlbi.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
