Mouse Genome Project
(YAC map, BAC framework)
A physical map of the mouse genome has been generated that combines
the results of The Max-Planck-Institute of Molecular Genetics (MPI-MG)
in Berlin, Germany with the mouse map data generated at the Whitehead
Institute for Biomedical Research/MIT Center for Genome Research,
recently published by Nusbaum et al (Nature Genetics 22, 1999, p.
388-393) and accessible online (www-genome.wi.mit.edu). Employing
Interspersed Repetitive Sequence (IRS)-PCR genomics, the Institute
has generated an advanced second-generation YAC contig map of the
mouse genome which doubles both the depth of clones and the density
of markers available. In addition to the primarily YAC -based map,
1,942 BAC (Bacterial Artificial Chromosome) clones have been positioned
on the map, providing for the first time a dense framework of BACs
spanning the genome of the mouse which can serve as a nucleus for
genomic sequencing. Four large-insert mouse YAC libraries from three
different strains are included in the Institute's data and the analysis
incorporates the data of Hunter et al. (1996) and Nusbaum et al.1999).
There is a total of 20,205 markers on the second-generation map,
12,033 from our own data. There is a total of 56,093 YACs; 44,401
are positive for more than one marker.
The URL for the second-generation YAC map is: The URL to our data
set is http://www.molgen.mpg.de/~rodent/.
