Jacque Minow, senior education policy analyst for National PTA, will give us her assessment of the prospects for ESEA reauthorization and continuation of the PIRCs, what changes may be proposed in the law, the impact of the ongoing budget-cutting on education programs, and the progress of the Family Engagement in Education Act. Arnie Fege, Director of Public Engagement and Advocacy at the Public Education Network, will give us his perspective.

A memorial celebration of Sue's career was held at the National Education Association headquarters in Washington, DC, on March 14th at NEA, 1201 16th Street, Washington, DC, in Conference Room B. A video was made of the event and will be available soon.

On February 5th, Sue Ferguson, the beloved long-time chair of the National Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education (NCPIE), died unexpectedly in her sleep. Founded in 1981, NCPIE is composed of more than 80 national education, parent, community and advocacy organizations that champion home, school and community partnerships to enhance the education of all young people, especially those from low-income neighborhoods.

Jan reported on NEA's September National Summit on Family/School/Community Engagement held in Alexandria, VA. She posed two thought questions to the small but intrepid group, who braved the drenching rain, sparking a spirited discussion. But, first a bit of background ....

bronze star Action Briefs: Helping Parents & Communities Better Understand the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB)
NCPIE and the Public Education Network (PEN) have developed online Action Briefs for the major themes covered in NCLB. These Briefs can be used in multiple ways — as a training tool, for professional development, or an easy reference to the law's intricacies — with a variety of audiences. Each Brief includes information on what the law says, action items for parents and community leaders and a set of resources. There will also be resources on the legislation, regulations and policy guidance, a glossary of education terms and an implementation timeline. Come back regularly to get new Action Briefs.

Legal Issues for School Districts Related to the Education of Undocumented Children
This booklet discusses 13 legal questions commonly asked by school board members and school administrators related to undocumented students. Unfortunately, few of the questions have definitive answers. Plyler directly addressed only the narrow question of whether undocumented children are entitled to receive a free public school education. Learn more here.
