Dedication of New Facility for Coral Reef Research

​Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and Directory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Dr. Patrick Gallagher today is helping dedicate the new Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research (CoECRER) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Hollywood, Florida. Gallagher joins state and local officials, including Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and other guests, including former Vice President Al Gore and Dr. Paul Sandifer, Senior Science Adviser to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in the opening celebration for the “only research facility in the nation dedicated entirely to coral reef ecosystems science.”

NIST Unveils Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility to Improve Testing of Energy-Efficient Technologies

​In a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) unveiled a new laboratory designed to demonstrate that a typical-looking suburban home for a family of four can generate as much energy as it uses in a year. Following an initial year-long experiment, the facility will be used to improve test methods for energy-efficient technologies and develop cost-effective design standards for energy-efficient homes that could reduce overall energy consumption and harmful pollution, and save families money on their monthly utility bills.

Department of Interior Announces Successful Renovation of Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

National Park Service to begin filling Reflecting Pool in coming days; Sustainable, accessible design to re-open to public end of August

WASHINGTON DC -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced that the National Park Service will soon begin refilling the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after completing a historic renovation, including replacement of the pool’s structure and installation of a sustainable, state-of-the-art circulation system that pulls water from the Tidal Basin. Nearly 25 million people visit the National Mall each year.

Getting Older Americans Online

​NTIA's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) is funding innovative programs across the nation that are working to close the digital divide. And a number of those projects are targeting a group of Americans too often left behind by today's fast-moving technology: seniors. Broadband can improve quality of life for older Americans in many ways. Online videoconferencing technology can allow seniors to see grandchildren who live on the other side of the country.

Greater Wahoo Development Foundation Uses American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds to Assist Four Businesses

​Wahoo, Nebraska, Aug 01, 2012 -- USDA Rural Development State Director Maxine Moul and staff presented the Greater Wahoo Development Foundation with a certificate today for fully utilizing the $125,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG), awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds created a revolving loan fund that, leveraged with $127,400, assisted four businesses creating 12 full time and 28 part time jobs in the community of 4,508.
