Legendary rivals and friends, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer dominated professional golf.

Members of the United States House and Senate gathered in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, to present golfer and philanthropist Arnold Palmer with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Arnold Palmer is here today because, throughout his life, he has been a model of integrity, passion, and commitment,” said House Speaker John Boehner. “These are the attributes of a great golfer, and of course, a great American.”

Palmer, who won seven major championships and sponsors several charities, was honored for his “service to the nation in promoting excellence and good sportsmanship,” the medal states. He joins the likes of Jesse Owens and Joe Louis to become the sixth athlete to receive the award.
