Description
The Division of Transplantation (DoT) is within the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration's Healthcare Systems Bureau (HSB). DoT is the primary federal entity responsible for oversight of the organ and blood stem cell transplant systems in the U.S. and for initiatives to increase the level of organ donation in this country. HSB's Organ Donation and Transplantation programs extend and enhance the lives of individuals with end-stage organ failure for whom an organ transplant is the most appropriate therapeutic treatment. Key elements of the program include the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), the national system that allocates and distributes donor organs to individuals waiting for an organ transplant; the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), a national database of statistics related to solid organ transplantation -- kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, heart, and lung; and efforts to increase the supply of donor organs made available for transplantation.
