HHS Emerging Leaders Program

The Next Generation of Leaders in HHS

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is recruiting for the next generation of leaders to join the federal ranks and support our mission to serve the American public.

The HHS Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a competitive, two-year, paid, federal internship within HHS. The program provides interns with a unique opportunity to develop enhanced leadership skills in one of the largest federal agencys in the nation. HHS is looking for talented and highly-motivated individuals with a commitment to public service. The program provides an excellent opportunity for participants to begin a professional career in HHS.

HHS is composed of the following eleven Operating Divisions offering placement and rotational opportunities for Emerging Leaders Interns:

The ELP offers participants the following:

  • Promotions from the GS-9-12 during the 2-year program
  • Formal competency-based leadership training and professional development
  • Rotational opportunities within HHS
  • Mentoring from senior executives and renowned experts in HHS
  • Networking opportunities with HHS leaders

Top candidates will possess the following:

  • A Master's Degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7
  • Commitment to public service
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability through academic and professional accomplishments
